June 4, 2006 — Many of the most important 20th century African-American artists are featured in Living with Art: Modern and Contemporary African-American Art from the Alitash Kebede Collection opening at Peninsula Fine Arts Center on June 3 and continuing through August 27, 2006.
Living with Art presents works by Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Herbert Gentry, Palmer Hayden, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence and Betye Saar among others. Stretching from the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s to the prolific period of Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration through today, this exhibition of national stature and scope contains over 70 works by 40 artists.
According to Pfac Program Director Michael Preble, and Art Knowledge News ( www.artknowledgenews.com ) “Living with Art is really quite a remarkable collection, one that would make any museum proud. As a private collection, it is extraordinary. It includes not only work by familiar names – but also significant work by many of these artists. The delightful surprise of the collection is the quality of work by less familiar figures, whose work now stands proudly in its contribution to the legacy of African-American art.”
Offering styles, subjects and media that range broadly, the art reflects many key themes throughout art history. From portraiture, landscapes and other captured moments to non-objective, abstract imagery, the entire collection was accumulated by Ethiopian expatriate Alitash Kebede. Kebede, who is based in Los Angeles, has been a friend and associate of many of the artists included in her carefully chosen collection.
