Author of ‘Eternal Treblinka’ to Address Natonal Animal Rights Convention in Washington, D.C.
Charles Patterson, author of the internationally acclaimed book that compares what modern society does to animals with what the Nazis did to their victims, will speak at the AR2006 Convention to be held just outside Washington, D.C. in Alexandria, Virginia, August 10-14, 2006. Patterson’s book — “Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust” — will soon be in ten languages.
New York, NY — Charles Patterson will address the national animal rights conference — AR2006 — on Thursday evening, August 10, in Alexandria, Virginia.
He will speak at the conference’s opening plenary session about “Animal Rights Through the Ages” and will also be on two panels — “Animal Perceptions” and “Commonalities of Oppression”–on Saturday.
The conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of the modern animal rights movement. http://www.arconference.org
The title of Dr. Patterson’s book comes from the Yiddish writer and Nobel Laureate, Isaac Bashevis Singer, to whom the book is dedicated. Singer was the first major modern author to describe the exploitation and slaughter of animals in terms of the Holocaust. “In relation to them, all people are Nazis,” he wrote, “for animals it is an eternal Treblinka.” (Treblinka was the Nazi death camp north of Warsaw.)
Eternal Treblinka has been translated and published in Germany, Italy, Poland, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Israel.
Calmann-Levy, a large, respected publisher in Paris, is now translating Eternal Treblinka into French and will publish “Éternel Treblinka” in 2007.
About the same time the Spanish edition — “Treblinka Eterna” — will also be published and distributed in Spain and throughout Latin America.
Portuguese and Serbian translations are also underway.
Eternal Treblinka examines the common roots of animal and human oppression and the similarities between how the Nazis treated their victims and how modern society treats the animals it slaughters for food.
The first part of the book describes the emergence of humans as the “master species” and how we came to dominate the earth and its other inhabitants. The second part examines the industrialization of slaughter of both animals and humans in modern times, while the last part of the book profiles Jewish and German animal advocates on both sides of the Holocaust, including Isaac Bashevis Singer himself.
