New Children’s Book, “Pirate Mom,” by Deborah Underwood Entices Early Readers
As Pirates of the Caribbean hits theaters, Deborah Underwood’s new book, “Pirate Mom,” capitalizes on pirate mania with a story that young children can read on their own.
San Francisco, CA — Parents who want to encourage pirate-crazy kids to read have a new tool in their literary arsenal: Deborah Underwood’s new book “Pirate Mom” (Random House).
Pete loves pirates—until his mom turns into one. During a magic show, The Amazing Marco hypnotizes Pete’s mom and she becomes a buccaneer. When Marco is called away before he can break the spell, Pete must find a way to rein in his marauding mother.
Kirkus Reviews says “Pirate Mom” is “a winner.” Booklist calls it an “amusing take on the ever-popular pirate theme…fun for independent readers and for reading aloud to younger children.” Colorful illustrations by Stephen Gilpin enhance the text and appeal to kids outside the easy reader target audience.
“Pirate Mom” is part of Random House’s Step Into Reading series. The book’s short sentences and controlled vocabulary allow 5- to 7-year-old children the satisfaction of reading independently.
“Sometimes stories for this age group skimp on plot to keep the language simple,” says Underwood. “Learning to read is a real struggle for some kids. I wanted to tell a fun story that gives them a good payoff for their hard work. And what better payoff than a pirate mom who swipes underwear from clotheslines and calls a nice old neighbor a bilge rat?”
The 48-page book is available in hardcover and paperback versions through booksellers nationwide and at www.piratemom.com.
