Mathes is a busy man, traveling the world and lending his talent to the notes, arrangements and lyrics of many of the world’s most influential musicians of today. Mathes has worked with Lou Reed, Bono, Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Jay-Z, Sade, Yo Yo Ma, Elton John, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Wynonna Judd, Faith Hill, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Ray Charles and many more, including an amazing group of musicians that join Rob on occasion to perform live. On Saturday, June 17, 2006, at 8:00 and 10:00 p.m., Rob Mathes and friends will perform two sets in a rare concert at Makor, located at the Steinhardt Building, 35 West 67th Street in New York City. Tickets are $20 per person and can be reserved in advance online at www.Makor.org or by calling 212-601-1000.
For the June 17th concert, Rob’s friends and band members will include Will Lee on bass from The Late Show with David Letterman and The Fab Faux; Shawn Pelton on drums from the Saturday Night Live band, Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow; Billy Masters on guitar who has played with Suzanne Vega and Cry, Cry, Cry; an eight-piece horn section led by Jeff Kievit; keyboardist Chris Coogan; and back-up singers Vaneese Thomas, a top 10 R&B singer and the daughter of legendary R&B musician Rufus Thomas; and Ian Cron.
Mathes’ own original music, which has some Steely Dan and Bob Dylan influences, includes a rich variety of spiritual Rhythm and Blues, some Dylan tunes and a wide variety of other music. Rob Mathes has a loyal fan base in the New York metropolitan area, but also a devoted following from some of the top musicians in the world. He has musically directed the Kennedy Center Honors for the past three years in a row, working with Tony Bennett, Tina Turner, Joan Sutherland, composer John Williams, James Brown, Loretta Lynn and Itzhak Perlman. He has also conducted with The Royal Philharmonic, the London Session Orchestra, and was commissioned by Leonard Slatkin, one of the great American Conductors, to create two pieces, one for the Opening Concert of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2005 Summer Season at The Hollywood Bowl, and another, an original Prologue and a new arrangement of the National Anthem to close the first concert of the 75th season of The National Symphony in Washington, which received a standing ovation. He has also worked with top music producers Clive Davis and Phil Ramone.
“The music that I write would best be described as being in that hallowed tradition of singer-songwriters from Joni Mitchell to Bob Dylan, but with a musical richness not unlike Steely Dan or late Beatles,” noted Mathes. “While most of my performances are in other parts of the country and the world, I’m thrilled to be able to have this opportunity to perform locally.”
