June 30, 2006 — The New York Society of Women Artists will be exhibiting the work of its members at The Art Students League of New York, Harriman Mason Gallery, 215 West 57th Street, New York City, from July 5 through August 2, 2006. The reception will be Tuesday, July 11, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The hours are Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sunday. The exhibition is entitled “The Inner Eye.”
The New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) was founded in 1920 and devoted to avant-garde women artists including Marguerite Zorach, Minna Harkavy, Henrietta Shore, Bena Frank Meyer, Theresa Bernstein, and others. Four of the original members participated in the first Armory Show, while others were members of the Whitney Studio Club and the Society of Independent Artists. The original members earned Guggenheim fellowships and Prix de Rome prizes. Six were included in the Federal Arts Program during the time of the Works Progress Administration of the New Deal.
From the beginning and continuing to the present, there is an intertwining between the NYSWA and the Art Students League of New York, as many NYSWA members have been League students. Most notably, Minna Harkavy and Bena Frank Meyer were long time students, and Ethel Katz taught a children’s class at the League for nearly thirty years. The NYSWA held an exhibition at the League’s gallery previously, in 1990.
“The Inner Eye” is an exhibition focusing on work that comes from long practice and hard thinking, work not tossed off but contemplated and showing the signs of inwardness. It may be seen as work done against the current canons, rebellious work and adventuresome. It is avant-garde, in truth, because it is deeply authentic. Not ironic but aesthetic, not shocking but eventful, this is work that needs serious appreciation and study.
