San Francisco, CA May 12, 2006 — SFCCO, the only orchestra whose members are both the composers and the performers, unite with the Schola Cantorum San Francisco, hailed as a “Bay Area gem” of musicianship, to premiere seven new works for Chorus and Chamber Orchestra. These two unique Bay Area musical voices will perform music whose inspiration varies from the traditional catholic mass to the majestic Redwoods and beyond.
Program:
Lisa Scola Prosek……….Libera Me *
Alexis Alrich…………………Canticle of the Sun **
John Beeman……………..Semperviren **
Erling Wold…………………Missa Beati Notkeri Balbuli Sancti Galli Monaci **
Michael Cooke……………Music For Humans
Mark Alburger…………….Missa “Thé à deux”
Jan Pusina………………..Selon l’Une
* made possible by the American Composers Forum
** made possible by Meet The Composer
The inspired program features no less than three settings of the Catholic mass: Alburger’s Missa “Thé à deux” (a cantus-firmus borrowing off the Vincent Youman’s “Tea for Two”); Erling Wold’s Missa Beati Notkeri Balbuli Sancti Galli Monaci (commissioned by the Cathedral of St. Gallen in Switzerland); and Prosek’s Libera Me, utilizing a Catholic chant for the aspersion of the Holy Water. This work has been made possible by the American Composers Forum “Community Engagement Series”. Alexis Alrich’s Canticle of the Sun sets local patron Saint Francis of Assisi to a score of neotonal and neominimal splendor while John Beeman, discovers his own spirituality within Sempervirens, an imaginative paean to our coastal redwoods. Finally, Michael Cooke sets the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet in Music for Humans and Jan Pusina adds a French twist with Selon L’Une.
A Choral Spectacular will be performed by SFCCO under Music Director Mark Alburger, Associate Conductor John Kendall Bailey, and Schola Cantorum San Francisco’s 12 voices under the guidance of John Renke.
SFCCO was founded by Dr. Mark Alburger with a mission to build new audiences of new music in San Francisco while cultivating local composers writing for traditional orchestra.
