On Friday, August 4, 2006 from 5 - 7 pm, The Los Niños Dance Studio of Marabella, Trinidad will perform with the Ottley Music School at Publick Playhouse for the Arts, 5445 Landover Road, Cheverly, Maryland 20784
Washington, DC, — The Ottley Music School’s closing production of its Summer Singing, Drama and Dance Institute will take place at the Publick Playhouse for the Performing Arts on Friday, August 4, from 5:00-7:00 pm. It will present with Los Niños Dance Studio of Marabella, Trinidad, a concert of vocal works representing most of the eras studied. Singers will perform the “Sanctus” from Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, and both singers and dancers will portray scenes from Scott Joplin’s opera Treemonisha. Los Niños Dance Studio will also perform “The Struggle”, the history of dance from Ballet to Modern, and “All Around”, a South African and Caribbean piece. The Publick Playhouse for the Performing Arts is located at 5445 Landover Road, Cheverly, Maryland. Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $7 students & senior citizens.
From Monday, July 24 - Friday, August 4, the Ottley Music School was involved in its Singing, Drama, Dance Summer Institute with special guests, Los Niños Dance Studio of Marabella, Trinidad, Beverley-Ann Ottley McLean, Director. Fourteen of these young people and adults assist in the Summer Institute. Vocal Students will learn vocal music of 4 different centuries in several languages. The Summer Institute is for 2 weeks from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily.
The Ottley Music School’s Singing, Drama and Dance Institute is open to singers of all ages. The curriculum includes: Music Theory and Ear-Training, 2 Private voice lessons; Classes in Drama; Dance, Stylized dances of the late 19th century including the Ring Play, Marche, Schottische, Slow Drag, Prance, Cake Walk, Square Dance and African and Caribbean dances; Choral Singing, History of Vocal Music with performances in songs of Black and other composers from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras, 20th Century, and also various styles of music including Art songs, Spirituals, Jazz Singing, Opera or Musicals, Sacred songs and Popular.
The teachers include Nicole Newman, lyric soprano; Lorree Slye, lyric soprano, jazz; and Nevilla E. Ottley, mezzo-soprano, harp, singing and drama; Anton Martinez, theory; Anwar Ottley, steel drums; Beverley-Ann McLean, choreographer and dance instructor.
Nevilla E. Ottley, a member of the music committee of Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist church will present the music for the morning services on Saturday, August 5, with students of the Ottley Music School and Los Niños Dance Studio at the 10:40 am service. At that service, Los Niños will present some of their Liturgical Dances including the South African Lord’s Prayer. Metropolitan Church is located at 6307 Riggs Road, Hyattsville, Maryland. Nevilla E. Ottley, with the 45-voice MetroSingers directed by Dr. Myron Ottley, will travel to Kenya three days later to serve the 3,500-member Central Nairobi Seventh-day Adventist Church as its official choir in its week long “Camp Meeting”. She will be responsible for presenting music seminars and workshops at the church and for the public at the university. She has received word that one of the workshops at the University of Nairobi already has 1,500 registrants.
The Ottley Music School will be on recess from lessons and classes from August 4 through 29. Classes and lessons resume on Wednesday, August 30. Vacation hours are M-F 10:00-5:00 pm.
