This showcase of dance pieces by independent choreographers features dancers and choreographers who have presented works across the country and around the globe including:
Lourdes Bastos, who studied dance with Martha Graham, Jose Limon, and Alvin Ailey, and who’s Brazil based dance company toured internationally, presents a passionate new solo work performed by Suzanne Willets Brooks. Entitled “A Taste of Brasil”.
Melissa Beck Matjias presents two works. “Yellow Wallpaper” is a solo based on a short story of the same name written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1891. It tells a story of a woman diagnosed with hysteria, confined to a room with ugly wallpaper, and prevented from creating her artwork. The dance does not take narrative form, but rather portrays her emotional journey.
“Sisters”, a premiere, is set to the classical guitar music of composer Francisco Terrega. This duet explores the complicated and myriad of facets defining the relationship between sisters.
Corinne Imberski , having returned to the area from New Mexico, explores new gestural, rhythmic movement themes in a duet performed by herself and Beth Wielinski.
Aimee McDonald-Anderson presents an excerpt from “Rippled Sea”, with music by Clock and Body, composed by Gerald Siclovan. “Rippled Sea” is an abstract exploration of what might happen if all the seas, lakes, and rivers went still and all the worlds’ people find they can step across the water, dissolving all boundaries.
Christina Sears-Etter contributes a quirky, energetic group work.
Beth Wielinski and Clock and Body comprise the arts collaborative WEB, and present a solo excerpt entitled “Strand” from the self-titled full-scale work “WEB”. Performed in blue silk, this languid, melodious work expresses a subtle sentimental romanticism.
Suzanne Willets Brooks presents a new trio, “Be Here NOW…Be Somewhere Else Later”. This is a lighthearted, humorous look at the American obsession with multi-tasking and competition, and its inability to stop and smell the roses.
What is Terpsichore’s Kitchen?
Terpsichore is the muse of dance and so we borrow her kitchen for cooking up choreography. Our goal as a dance production company is to provide opportunities and support for independent choreographers so that you, the dance audience, get to see works that might otherwise go unseen for lack of resources.
