May 27, 2006 — With over 7,000 hits and 3,000 readers online girly comic strip ‘The Trouble With Katie Rogers’ has reached heights artist and creator Des Taylor could not even imagine two years ago when he first sketched the heroine. Loosely based on the adventures of one of his closest friends the strip mainly consists of girly type humor centering on the daily life of Katie Rogers, a British girl working as a publicist in the city of New York.
Written originally for a graphic novel, Katie Rogers is seen to the artist as a modern day, ordinary superhero that is ‘Ally McBeal, Bridget Jones, and Alias, all wrapped into one.
In the comic we see Katie enjoying life despite her everyday struggles:
representing her clients whilst balancing her cheque book, finding time to sort out her best friends love life - and her own! - and trying to stop her “colleague” Crystal Rose from making her look inadequate in front of the rest of the office….
With this concoction the strip has gained an army of followers through the popular internet site ‘Myspace.com even attracting the eyes of celebrities such as The Faders, Girls Aloud, Joss Stone and the Sugababes . And it’s only been up for 2 months!
Illustrator Des Taylor - more known for his work creating super heroes and heroines - decribes a brief meeting with a female friend in Watford, which inspired him to base Katie’s character on his friend and some of her legendary exploits.
” I wanted my character to be real and not super human” he told us. ” Originally she was going to be your usual type of character that found it hard to find love, find a job or find her way in the world. But I wanted Katie to have everything that she ever wanted, a good job, a hunky boyfriend who loves her and a great lifestyle. It is what she has to do to keep them all that makes her a hero.”
A decision was made that the “real Katie Rogers” would remain anonymous which has fans of the strip wanting to know more about her. In April the creators launched ‘ Katie’s Party”, a night of live music mixed with funky DJs at trendy bar SugaSuga in Soho, London. Readers of the strip turned up wanting to meet the woman
that has been an inspiration to them, but sadly, Katie had “just left for New York for a 7am meeting with Cosmo’s style editor….”
Some of the fans were asked why they liked the strip so much as there have only been 12 strips so far and her web-blog story.
The reply we mostly got was that Katie Rogers was a dream for most girls that wanted to go to New York and work in the fashion and media industry. She is an English girl in a foreign land living the dream and has things which are obtainable with hard work, good friends, self belief - and a bit of luck!.
Next up for Des and his buddy Karl Allen Muncey who built her website and helped promote global awareness for the character, is to finish the 100 page Graphic Novel and take the character to the next level. Let’s see where Katie Rogers ends up next.
