Competition has always been a main component of the State Fair ever since the first organized fair was held in Virginia in 1854. Today, thousands of Virginians young and old return each year to compete for scholarships, premiums and the coveted blue ribbons awarding popular hobbies including the largest pumpkin, the tastiest pie, the finest quilt and the prettiest cow.

Quilling – a folk art technique involving rolling thin strips of paper into different shapes to form designs – such as hearts, squares, tulips and more.
Tamari Ball – a technique involving a styrofoam ball being wrapped in string, creating colorful designs and patterns.

Also new this year in the Livestock competitions is a Youth Market Goat Show October 2 & 3, as well as new scholarships for youths in SkillsUSA competitions.
Numerous popular competitions are returning in 2006. A crowd favorite in its inaugural year at the 2005 State Fair, the Hershey’s Cocoa Classic State Championship this year extends its invitation to not only first place winners, but also to second and third place winners, of the best Hershey’s baked desserts at local county fairs for the grand bake-off, happening once again in the Blue Ribbon Mall. Giant Pumpkins also return to the Crops Center; last year’s winning pumpkin, entered by Kreig O’Bryant of Courtland, weighed in at 757 pounds.
